Jon Spencer & The HITmakers and Quasi at Madame Lou's 04/24/2022
Last Sunday, Jon Spencer & the HITmakers and Quasi rolled into town and played at the new Madame Lou's in Belltown. Jon Spencer and his band electrified the basement of the Crocodile reinvigorating the bodies and minds of a mostly middle aged crowd.
Jon spencer’s latest band configuration includes Sam Comes (Quasi) on keys and vocals and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Quasi) on drums. Jon’s old Pussy Galore bandmate Bob Bert (Sonic Youth) held down alternative percussion banging on a pile of beat up car parts with hammers, metal rods, and various other Ace hardware supplies. All together the group sounded solid and powerful. Sam and Janet worked double duty opening as Quasi and supporting Jon as the HITmakers.
Apparently Jon had just recently gotten over covid (me too, it sucked) and signs were placed in the venue requesting patrons to wear masks. Covid is still wrecking havoc for touring artists as shows are being cancelled due to infections.
Quasi was a solid opener with Sam’s modified keyboard creating a wall of sound with his various custom effects over Janet’s patented drum backing.
The HITmakers played about 20 songs with a 5 song encore that Jon seemed to need to get out of his system. The group sounded energetic and tight. Sam and Janet's backing combined with Jon’s rock and roll demeanor we're the perfect blend of talented musicianship and fierce rock and roll energy. Plus, thanks to Bob Bert’s unique percussion, I can now say I've seen a band where someone played trash cans with hammers.
